FROM THE PITS: FEB 3/2012
*Once
again we have been blessed with an addition to our family, and all of a sudden we are
going to need 4 Jr. Dragsters, another pink one will be required for Derek
and T"s new baby girl. Julia
Alissa Malcolm was Born
Jan 31 @ 11:58 and crossed the scales at 8 pounds 12 ounces. Everyone is
doing good, in fact all where home by 3:00pm the same day, Olivia loves her
new sister and has been a big help with Mom and Dad.
*Well we told you
last week that the Door Car side of things was a sell out for the A ugust
3rd. High Roller race and we can tell you this week that Carleton Place,
Ontario's Kevin Morrow will fill out that final spot on the ladder. Kevin
who is no stranger to winners circles at Luskville Dragway, Shannonville or
the Napa Tour will be one of the cars to watch as he probably has more round
wins at Luskville than any other car entered in the program high roller Door
side. Kevin who is the 2011 inaugural Door Pro Series Champion has been a
strong supporter of Luskville Dragway and all our program, Shannonville
Dragway and the Napa Tour. Kevin and wife Trish are
going to be
extra busy this summer as they have two Jr. Dragsters now as we wrote about
a few weeks back. Kevin has also told us he is committed to defending his
Door Pro Championship and will start that defense on May 19th and the first
Door Pro race.
*Word out of
Pembroke is we are going to see a Rookie Female Semi Pro
competitor this upcoming season, she will be part of a existing Super Pro Team
and will wheel a Ford Mustang, stay tuned. This is great news for what is
already a tremendous Semi Pro Class with a number of females.
*Wanted to pass this
sad info on too everyone, Pierre Quimet called to let me know that he has
had a serious set back towards his returning to the race track this season.
Pierre has suffered a stroke and is recovering but will not be doing any
racing this upcoming summer. When we talked last fall Pierre was very upbeat
about returning too the track in 2012, this after not being able to finish
the 2011 season because of sickness. I know that everyone along with all of
us wish Pierre nothing but a very speedy and healthy recovery. |

HINTON AUTOMOTIVE/WEST CARLETON WE BE FRONT & CENTER AGAIN IN 2012:
FEB 03/12
One
of the biggest stories last season was the purchasing of West Carleton
Automotive by Hinton Automotive, and the merging of both business's in the
Brand New State of Art Shop on 129 Walgreen Road in Ottawa's West End. Vern &
Cathy Hinton have been big supporters of Motorsports in this area as has
Larry Aslagsen the owner of West Carleton Automotive. The combining of both
business into one shop although a surprise for some was one of the best
business moves I have seen since I took over Luskville Dragway over 30 years
ago. Larry Aslagsen who is considered one of the very best race engine
builders to ever come out of this area, has been pointing out for a few
years now that he wanted to slow down a bit, and wanted very much for the
West Carleton Trademark and service to continue, as did many race oriented
individuals in this area as well as places far away. Long known for building
some of the best engines in Drag Racing, Stock Car Racing, Dirt Racing,
Truck and Tractor Pulling as well as any type of street performance you
would like. And not much has changed in this as Larry continues to oversee
the day too day operations of West Carleton Automotive now located in its
much closer too the city location in Stittsville, just off the Carp Road.
Vern Hinton is also no stranger too the performance world, as his business
besides doing the regular automotive repairs has always worked on race cars,
street cars and hot rods. In fact its not unusual when visiting Hinton
Automotive too see many slick looking pieces of street performance machines
of all types and makes sitting in the shop or the full parking lot. Like
Larry who was also one of this area's very best NHRA Drag Racers, Vern has
been around race cars since I can remember, building them, working on them,
driving them or what ever needed to be done with them. So in keeping with
the BIG story of 2011 Hinton Automotive kept the word big going when they
took the title rights too the Luskville Dragway Winners Circle and the
BIGGEST sign the track has. Agreeing to a three year and beyond deal the
Hinton Automotive /West Carleton Automotive Winners Circle will be around
for while, as will one of the busiest Automotive Repair-Performance Shops in
this country. It should also be pointed out that this shop can offer the
customer any form of Performance work they want, something as simple as
parts, something as complete as a full blown race engine and something as
complete as a complete race car package which they have done for some
already. The shop employee's a number of other people who come with a MAJOR
performance automotive background and is equipped with every piece of
equipment require to do what they do so well, including a full dyno room.
Yes as we move into the 2012 season, once cant help but wonder just how big
this new venture will get as it is as close as you can come to a BIG BOX
STORE (everything under one roof) approach as you can get, following what
has become the norm in all aspects of retail and service today. |

Will Robertson relies on Small Block |
Long known for building some of the best power in our area, many local
racers rely on West Carleton for Horse Power, and it doesn't matter whether
its Ford, Chevy or Dodge big or small block, they build them all |

DOOR PRO
SET TOO RUMBLE ONCE AGAIN IN 2012: FEB 03/2012
W ow, what a week it has been for
the door pro class, with the announcement of a potential points fund
supporter in the works over six new entree's came screaming in all at once.
We have in the past just posted one or two at a time but believed it was
important to show everyone that Door Pro is a alive and well for 2012, but
too also point out we need the support of all those door car drivers out
there who want door car racing to flourish. We know we have a long way to go
but we also know that over 50 drivers had their name on the list for last
years first ever event, and it will be hard to match the excitement of last
season when it was all brand new, but that is something we have too do. We
need the drivers to line up, like they did this week, and get their name on
the list so we can make this years second season of door pro even bigger
than we did in its rookie season. I think the response too the door car High
Roller event is a perfect example of how far we have come with the Door Car
Class and the rebirth of wanting to own a door car, and race a door car in
competition. We are trying too do what we can, but we need t he help of the
racers, the advertisers and the fans to keep it going. Heading this weeks
list of names is John Forsyth and his wheel standing Malibu who is also one
of the Door Car High Roller entree's. John who is no stranger to Luskville
Dragway having raced back there when we took over the track in 1980. Kevin
Morrow your 2011 Door Pro Points Champion has committed to this race and
much, much more has also added his name to the May 19th. date, as he will
begin the defense of his title. Brian Swayne who has teamed up with Tom
Cline too share the driving will also be part of the first Door Pro race of
the summer and he too would like very much to see a $points fund posted as
he is prepared to take a stab at that also. Along with the three local
drivers who threw their hat in the ring this week, another 3 drivers from
the North plan on making the trek on May 19-20 too be part of the Malcolm
Carpentry opening weekend as well as competing in the Door Pro race on
Saturday. Ryan Eckensviller,
Dan Allard and Gord Harling will all make the long haul to Luskville Dragway
for some NHRA Drag Racing action. Also heading down from north of Luskville
but not quite as far as the previous group, is the "FREW CREW" Sheldon
Dodge, Chris and Gerald Dennique from Renfrew. This brings our totals too 14
committed cars in the early going of this drive and is a long way from the
50 we had last year, but certainly not the end of entree's for sure.
Once again this is a crucial turning point for the door pro class, and like
anything heading into its second year its always harder to get the
excitement going like it is the first time around. |
BRANDON BARKER
MAKES THE BIG MOVE TO SUPER PRO IN 2012: FEB. 03/2012
If
your wondering why this 3rd. generation drag racer is all smiles, just click
on picture too see. Brandon Barker will like a number of Jr. Dragster pilots
before him, make the move too Super Pro eliminator behind the wheel of a rear
engine Dragster. Brandon who is the Grandson of the late Jim Parkhurst and
nephew to current drag racer Steve Parkhurst comes by his love of our sport
naturally. Brandon who has been racing with his families support (Mom
Sherry, Dad Rob, Brother Daniel, Uncle Steve as well as his Grandfather Jim
when he was here) has waited for this moment for 10 years now. Yes he
started r unning
Jr. when he was 6 years old and won the Shannonville Track Championship SIX
times over those years. Brandon like a number of other current Super Pro
racers (Derek Malcolm, Kyle Jessup, Troy Davis, Christian Scollard, Tiffany
Way) is proof of the success of the Jr. Dragster Programs that take place at
Shannonville and Luskville Dragway. The new ride is a slick big block
Chevrolet powered Undercover Dragster that was run by the Hyde Racing of
southern Ontario and will now run under the Parkhurst Motors in Belleville,
Ontario. The Family has not sold the Jr. as of this writing, but have a few
people interested in it if they decided too do that, Brandon is still
eligible to run the Jr. one more year, but there is no question once he gets
behind the wheel of the BIG car it will be hard to ever jump back into a Jr.
I know that his Grandfather Jim lived for this day, and with out doubt will
be looking down at his grandson as he makes the big move, I think it was two
years ago when Granddad arranged for Brandon too drive a big car down the
track at the end of a weekend and you knew then it was just around the
corner. If things go well then there is a pretty good chance that Brandon
will compete in the Shannonville seson long series and also compete for
Super Pro Rookie of the year, we will keep you posted on more news coming
out of this team as it happens. I know everyone joins me in wishing
Brandon the best of luck in 2012. |
QHRA
CONFIRMS JUNE 2-3 DATES WITH LUSKVILLE DRAGWAY: FEB 03/2012
The
Quebec Heads Up Racing Association has confirmed one of their points races
will be held at Luskville Dragway on June 2-3 as part of the bi g
Pontiac Days weekend. The association which has not been around that long
had a small set back in 2011 do too some advertisers pulling out which did
not allow the series to run last season, where one date was also scheduled
for Luskville Dragway. Head of the association Christian Brisebois has
assured us that this year they will be part of our racing program and are
looking forward too it very much. Christian who is no stranger to Luskville
as can be attested by the photo of him leaving the starting line with the
wheels in the air on one of his many visits ov er
the years. The heads up racing will be part of our already very busy weekend
with all class's being run on both Saturday and Sunday. We will be
staggering the class's so their will be plenty of opportunity for all to
take part in more than just one portion of the race weekend. The QHRA is
made up of a wide variety of Heads Up class's featuring some of the very
best male and female racers in Quebec and Ontario. The series makes stops at
Sanair, Naperville as well as Luskville Dragway and are looking for more
venues to show case their Heads Up style of Drag Racing. The race at
Luskville will conducted on the 1/8 mile course as is all of the tracks
major events. Street racing is however still ran on the 1/4 Mile and it
would not be a big surprise to see some of our large cruise night contingent
take part in this first ever QHRA event at our track. |
